NMB BANK PLC RANKED AMONG AFRICA’S TOP 40 BANKS

Cementing its Position as Tanzania’s #1 Bank and Among East Africa’s Top 5

Dar es Salaam, 23 October 2025; NMB Bank Plc has been ranked among the Top 40 Banks in Africa, earning recognition as the Number One bank in Tanzania and the only Tanzanian bank within the Top 5 in East Africa, according to African Business Magazine’s 2025 rankings.

The prestigious recognition is based on a comprehensive analysis of total capital, total assets, and net profits, underscoring NMB’s strong financial foundation, sustained growth momentum, and operational excellence.

This achievement highlights NMB’s steady rise as one of Africa’s most resilient and dynamic financial institutions—built on strong fundamentals, robust governance, and disciplined execution of its long-term growth strategy.

As of June 2025, NMB’s total assets exceeded TZS 14 trillion, supported by a solid capital base, strong liquidity, and a five-year annual growth rate of more than 30% in net profits. The Bank’s return on equity remains among the highest in the region, reflecting efficient capital allocation and prudent management.

These results are a direct outcome of the Bank’s 2021–2025 Medium-Term Plan, which prioritised financial inclusion, digital transformation, operational efficiency, and sustainability. Today, over 96% of customer transactions occur outside branches, reflecting the success of NMB’s continued investment in technology and customer experience.

Beyond financial performance, NMB continues to lead in responsible banking and sustainability. In 2021, NMB became the first bank in Africa to issue a Gender Bond, a groundbreaking initiative that reinforced its commitment to inclusive finance and women’s economic empowerment.

This landmark achievement earned NMB international acclaim, including the Platinum Award for Sustainable Bond of the Year from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Global SME Finance Forum.

NMB has also garnered multiple global accolades, such as:

  • Africa’s Best Bank for Sustainability by Euromoney
  • Top Employer Certification for workplace excellence
  • EDGE Certification for gender equality — becoming the first African bank to attain this milestone

Leadership Statement

Commenting on the achievement, Ruth Zaipuna, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of NMB Bank Plc, said:

This recognition represents the strength of our strategy, the resilience of our people, and the trust our customers place in us. It is a proud moment for Tanzania and a reminder of our responsibility to continue building a world-class financial institution that delivers sustainable value for all stakeholders.”

NMB’s inclusion among Africa’s Top 40 Banks reinforces the Bank’s reputation as a stable, forward-looking institution driving inclusive growth and innovation. As NMB concludes its current strategic cycle and prepares for the next phase, its focus remains clear — to continue shaping the future of banking through sustainability, technology, and service excellence.

Appreciation to Stakeholders

In celebrating this continental recognition, NMB Bank Plc extended heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders — customers, employees, shareholders, strategic partners, and regulators — whose unwavering support has fueled the bank’s success.

We dedicate this achievement to every stakeholder who has walked this journey with us,” said the Bank in a public statement. “Together, we are not only building a bank but also transforming lives and shaping a stronger financial future for Tanzania and the region,” added Ms. Zaipuna.
