Stanbic Bank Tanzania has handed over a multi-million project to Magomeni Primary School in Mtwara Region, being part of the firm’s efforts towards educational development in the country.

The Bank’s support amounting to TZS 50 million included the reconstruction of two class rooms and the headmaster’s office, electricity connection to the school, handover of desks and provision of uniforms to the school pupils. Part of the amount came from personal donations by the bank’s staff.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held at the school premises over the weekend, Stanbic Bank Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Ken Cockerill, explained that the heartfelt donation was part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative tailored towards community development in the country, with a renewed focus on education.

”This project will benefit more than 700 students. It resulted from a call for assistance following catastrophic floods that ravaged through the Mtwara area last year, in which the school was partially destroyed. Although we were originally asked to provide foodstuff following the floods, we felt we could do something more that would have a lasting effect,” the Chief Executive said.

He reiterated Stanbic Bank’s belief in sustainable corporate social responsibility projects especially in education.

“We at Stanbic Bank believe that educating and empowering our children today will create a strong foundation for a better tomorrow. Education is the best means to develop our greatest abilities,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Halima Dendego, thanked the bank for its support, noting that it would go a long way in ensuring access to quality education for children in the area. ‘Today’s gesture by Stanbic Bank complements the efforts of the government in providing necessary tools to enhance learning in schools,” she said.

The school’s head teacher, Rashid Kajonjo who was virtually thrilled, said the donation came at the right time and would help solve some of the biggest problems at the school.

“Before this project came along, we had inadequate class rooms and facilities to accommodate 764 students at the school. Students were studying under trees located in the school compound, this meant that lessons had to be cancelled during rainy seasons. We thank the bank’s management for their support and I call upon other institutions to emulate this noble gesture,” he said.
