DAR ES SALAAM SET TO HOST FIRST-EVER INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL – PICF 2026

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; 15 April 2026 — Tanzania’s entertainment scene is set for a major milestone as Punchline Africa officially announces the launch of the Punchline International Comedy Festival (PICF) 2026, the country’s first international comedy festival.

Scheduled to take place from 25 May to 1 June 2026 in Dar es Salaam, the week-long festival will bring together top comedians from across Africa for a vibrant celebration of humor, creativity, and cultural exchange.

A Week of Laughter, Culture, and Connection

PICF 2026 promises an exciting lineup of live performances, media engagements, and interactive cultural experiences, culminating in a spectacular Grand Finale at the Superdome.

The festival will feature both English and Swahili comedy performances, showcasing the diversity and richness of comedic talent across the continent while creating a platform for cross-cultural storytelling.

Comedy Meets Mental Wellness

Beyond entertainment, PICF 2026 places strong emphasis on the role of comedy in promoting mental wellness. At a time when many people face increasing social and personal pressures, the festival aims to highlight laughter as a powerful tool for healing, connection, and emotional well-being.

Speaking about the initiative, Punchline Africa Co-Founder Evans Bukuku noted:

Comedy is not just about making people laugh. It helps people make sense of life, relieve stress, and connect with one another. Through PICF, we want to create a space where people leave feeling lighter, even as they navigate everyday challenges.”

Strong International and Institutional Support

The festival has garnered strong backing from international and local partners, including the French Embassy in Tanzania.

French Ambassador Anne Sophie Ave emphasized the importance of supporting young creative talent:

Many young people are incredibly talented and are already creating innovative content, but often lack confidence. We believe this platform will inspire them to step forward, grow, and access international opportunities.”

She also highlighted Tanzania’s significance as a host nation:

Tanzania has historically been a hub for Pan-African unity. Through comedy, the country can continue to bring Africa together in a unique and powerful way.”

A Boost for Tanzania’s Creative Industry

The Tanzania Film Board has welcomed the initiative, describing it as a potential turning point for the comedy industry.

Emmanuel Ndumukwa, Director of Film Development, stated:

This festival marks a significant milestone and could be a breakthrough moment for the comedy industry in Tanzania. The government is ready to support such initiatives through cultural funding, while ensuring inclusive participation opportunities.”

Adding to this, comedians’ representative Humphrey Richard (MC Kisoli) expressed optimism about the festival’s long-term impact:

This is more than entertainment. It’s a platform for learning, collaboration, and growth. It has the potential to transform the lives of comedians across Tanzania and Africa.”

Backed by Création Africa Initiative

PICF 2026 is part of the Création Africa initiative, funded by the French Embassy and coordinated by Alliance Française Dar es Salaam. The program supports artists and creative organisations by providing access to resources, training, and international exposure.

A Growing Platform for African Talent

Organised in collaboration with key partners including the French Embassy, Alliance Française, the Tanzania Film Board, and SGA Security, the festival aims to position Tanzania as a key destination for international comedy and creative arts.

The official launch took place on 15 April 2026 at the Punchline Comedy Club in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, bringing together stakeholders from across the creative and cultural sectors.

With expectations to attract a diverse audience of creatives, young people, and entertainment enthusiasts, PICF 2026 is also projected to reach over one million people through digital platforms.

More details on performing artists, event schedules, and ticketing will be announced soon.
