Barclays Bank has reiterated its commitment to continue playing a key role in deepening Africa’s financial services sector pushed by strong economic growth.
Barclays Plc. Chief Executive Antony Jenkins, said Africa presents one of the world’s major investment opportunities today but the continent needs the support of institutions which can consistently provide the requisite support and investment that allows for sustainable growth.
Mr Jenkins visited Tanzania on Friday where he met with customers, employees and other local stakeholders.
“The creation of Barclays Africa Group Limited last year positions Barclays well to support development in Africa and deepen the continent’s financial markets. Our wide geographical footprint, our long history and unique capabilities across Africa give us a great opportunity to help facilitate economic growth across the continent,” said Mr Jenkins.
Mr Jenkins was announced Barclays chief executive in 2012 replacing Bob Diamond who quit after the Libor rigging scandal.
One of his first strategic moves was combining Africa operations of Barclays, including Tanzania.
