Coca-Cola Kwanza has received a United Nations Business Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Award 2026 from the Global Compact Network Tanzania (GCNT) in recognition of its contribution to advancing SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
The award recognises a project under the Coca-Cola system’s Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, a nearly USD 25 million investment designed to address critical water-related challenges in local communities across 20 African countries by 2030.
USD 1.94 MILLION INVESTMENT TO RESTORE RUVU BASIN
In Tanzania, the initiative includes a USD 1.94 million investment focused on restoring the Ruvu Basin, a vital water source for Dar es Salaam residents and an important lifeline for communities, farms and businesses across eastern Tanzania.
The project is being implemented through a partnership involving the Coca-Cola system in Tanzania, Global Water Challenge, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board.
The initiative aims to deliver tangible environmental and community benefits through activities including tree planting, restoration of catchment areas and adoption of more climate-resilient livelihood practices, with at least 2,000 farmers expected to benefit.
RECOGNITION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The award was presented by GCNT during the third edition of the Business SDG Awards Gala, held on 26 June 2026.
GCNT recognised the project for demonstrating a strong commitment to integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into Coca-Cola Kwanza’s core business operations and contributing to Tanzania’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Speaking on the recognition, David Chait, General Manager of Coca-Cola Kwanza, said the award demonstrates the impact that can be achieved through collective action and partnerships.
“We are immensely proud of this recognition, which demonstrates the impact of collective action,” said Chait.
He noted that water is essential to people and ecosystems and is the main ingredient in most Coca-Cola products.
According to Chait, Coca-Cola aims to promote water stewardship within its business and beyond by improving water-use efficiency and treating and returning safe water to communities.
He added that the Tanzania project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Africa and its belief that meaningful impact is achieved by working closely with partners and implementing organisations.
NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FOR WATER SECURITY
The award-winning project focuses on improving water replenishment through nature-based solutions, restoring catchment areas and supporting more sustainable water management in the Ngerengere catchment of the Ruvu sub-basin.
The recognition highlights the importance of partnerships in addressing complex water challenges and demonstrates how collaboration between the private sector, government institutions, conservation organisations and local communities can contribute to a more sustainable and water-secure future for Tanzania.
Through the initiative, Coca-Cola Kwanza and its partners are contributing not only to the protection of a critical water resource but also to building more resilient livelihoods for communities whose economic activities depend on the health of the Ruvu Basin.
