Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 23 July 2026 – Stanbic Bank Tanzania, in partnership with Visa, has recorded a significant increase in digital card usage following the successful completion of a nationwide campaign aimed at accelerating secure, cross-border digital payments as Tanzania intensifies its transition towards a cashless economy.

The campaign delivered remarkable results, with card usage increasing by 113% in transaction volume and 201% in transaction value, while card activation surged by an impressive 3,082% in transaction volume and 449% in transaction value, highlighting growing customer confidence in digital payment solutions.

The initiative comes at a time when Tanzania is making significant progress in expanding digital financial services. Government efforts to promote digital payments across key sectors, alongside the implementation of the National Financial Inclusion Framework (2023–2028), are encouraging greater adoption of secure and convenient cashless payment solutions.

Empowering Customers for the Digital Economy

Targeted at Stanbic Bank's Personal and Private Banking customers, the campaign encouraged the use of Stanbic Visa Cards for international travel, online shopping, tuition payments and cross-border business transactions.

Beyond promoting card usage, the initiative focused heavily on customer education, helping users understand the security, convenience and global acceptance of digital payments while encouraging a shift away from cash-based transactions.

Strong Growth Reflects Changing Customer Behaviour

Speaking on the campaign's success, Emmanuel Mahodanga, Head of Personal Banking at Stanbic Bank Tanzania, said the results demonstrate that Tanzanians are increasingly embracing secure digital payment solutions.

"These numbers tell us Tanzanians are ready to embrace secure digital payments — and our partnership with Visa is about more than issuing cards; it is about equipping them to participate fully in a digital, connected economy," said Mahodanga.

He noted that Stanbic Bank remains committed to providing customers with secure and globally accepted payment solutions for travel, international education and business while contributing to the development of a more inclusive financial ecosystem.

Visa Reaffirms Commitment to Tanzania's Digital Transformation

Victor Makere, Country Manager for Visa Tanzania, said the partnership demonstrates how collaboration between financial institutions and global payment providers can accelerate Tanzania's digital transformation.

"At Visa, we are proud to partner with Stanbic Bank in advancing secure, seamless digital payments at a time when Tanzania is making real strides towards a cashless economy," Makere said.

He added that the campaign's exceptional growth reflects increasing customer trust in digital payments and supports the country's broader goal of building a more financially inclusive economy.

Secure Payments Anywhere in the World

Stanbic Visa Cards provide customers with secure and globally accepted payment solutions across millions of merchants worldwide.

Whether travelling abroad, studying overseas, shopping online or making international business payments, cardholders can transact confidently while benefiting from enhanced security features, global acceptance and exclusive travel, lifestyle and merchant offers.

Expanding Digital Payment Adoption

Looking ahead, Stanbic Bank and Visa plan to deepen their strategic partnership by expanding customer education programmes, increasing access to Visa's global rewards and merchant offers, and leveraging data-driven insights to deliver more personalised banking experiences.

The two organisations say these efforts will further strengthen Tanzania's digital payments ecosystem while supporting the country's broader vision of a connected, cashless and financially inclusive economy.

As digital payments continue to reshape the financial landscape, partnerships such as that between Stanbic Bank and Visa are expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating financial inclusion, improving payment security and enabling Tanzanians to participate more fully in the global digital economy.
