TANZANIA: AIRTEL, TIGO JOIN FORCES

Airtel Managing Director Sunil Colaso speaks in Dar es Salam yesterday during the official launch of the use of  interoperability service that allows Airtel Money customers to send and receive money across networks directly into their Airtel money wallets.

Dar es Salaam. Airtel Money customers can now send and receive money from Tigo’s Tigo Pesa platform, thanks to an initiative launched in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The initiative is known as interoperability service.
It allows Airtel Money customers to send and receive money from Tigo Pesa networks directly into their Airtel money wallets.
The initiative, according to the firm’s managing director, Mr Sunil Colaso, is the first of its kind in Africa and the entire world.
It comes after an agreement that was signed between Airtel Tanzania, Tigo and Zantel in Dar es Salaam about two months ago.
“The service is now available for Airtel and Tigo customers….clients can now experience easy, secure, fast and affordable money transfer services,” Mr Colaso said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
This means that money transferred via Tigo Pesa to an Airtel subscriber will now directly land in the Airtel Money e-wallet. This removes the hurdle that one had to go through in making sure that the money is withdrawn on specific timeline during the days of off-net transactions.
According to Mr Colaso, Airtel Money Agents will be able to seamlessly assist customers in cashing in and out with ease without necessarily retrieving payment confirmation messages from customers’ mobile phones.
