The National Bank of Commerce (NBC), in partnership with the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), has launched a digital share trading service that enables Tanzanians to buy and sell shares of companies listed on the DSE through NBC’s mobile banking platform, NBC Kiganjani.
The partnership integrates the DSE Hisa Kiganjani platform with NBC Kiganjani, making capital market investment more accessible by allowing members of the public to invest directly in listed companies using their mobile phones, without the need to visit bank branches or capital market institutions.
A brief ceremony to introduce the partnership was held in Dar es Salaam and brought together senior officials from the two institutions, including DSE Chief Executive Officer Peter Nalitolela, NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi, and Alfred Mkombo, Director of Research, Policy and Planning at the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), who represented CMSA Chief Executive Officer and Director General CPA Nicodemus Mkama.
NBC KIGANJANI OPENS ACCESS TO SHARE INVESTMENT
Speaking at the event, NBC Managing Director Theobald Sabi said the new service will enable customers to buy and sell shares, access important market information and monitor the value of their investments conveniently and securely at any time.
“We are delighted to announce the partnership between DSE Hisa Kiganjani and NBC Kiganjani. This collaboration gives our customers the opportunity to buy shares directly through their NBC accounts using NBC Kiganjani,” said Sabi.
He said the initiative is designed to remove some of the barriers that have traditionally limited access to capital market services and encourage more Tanzanians to participate in the investment economy.
SERVICE ALSO AVAILABLE TO NON-NBC CUSTOMERS
DSE Chief Executive Officer Peter Nalitolela said the service is not restricted to existing NBC customers.
He explained that people who do not already have an NBC account can download NBC Kiganjani, open an account using their National Identification Number (NIDA) and access the digital share trading service.
“We have enabled our DSE Hisa Kiganjani platform to be integrated with NBC Kiganjani. Once a customer logs into NBC Kiganjani, they can access DSE Hisa Kiganjani and buy shares directly,” said Nalitolela.
According to Nalitolela, the initiative also seeks to change how Tanzanians perceive bank accounts—from being primarily tools for saving money to becoming instruments for building wealth through investment.
He encouraged Tanzanians to make greater use of their bank accounts to invest, noting that mobile phones can now be used not only to make payments but also to invest in shares of different companies.
CMSA WELCOMES DIGITAL CAPITAL MARKET INTEGRATION
Meanwhile, CMSA Director of Research, Policy and Planning Alfred Mkombo said the integration of the NBC and DSE systems represents an important step towards increasing public participation in Tanzania’s capital and securities markets.
“The integration of the NBC and DSE systems is expected to bring more people into the capital and securities markets through digital platforms,” said Mkombo.
He said the service will enable NBC customers to access the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange through their mobile phones anytime and from anywhere, helping to address some of the challenges associated with accessing investment services.
Mkombo added that, for CMSA and the capital markets sector as a whole, the service presents an important opportunity to broaden public participation in investment and ensure that the benefits of capital markets reach a larger segment of society.
However, he urged NBC to develop a dedicated public education and awareness strategy to help Tanzanians understand how to use the service and, more importantly, gain knowledge of the fundamental principles and risks associated with investing in capital markets.
A NEW STEP TOWARDS DIGITAL INVESTMENT
The NBC Kiganjani and DSE Hisa Kiganjani integration marks another step in the digitalisation of Tanzania’s financial and capital markets, bringing share trading closer to the public through mobile technology.
The service provides investors with a more convenient channel to participate in the DSE while supporting efforts to expand financial inclusion, investment awareness and public participation in Tanzania’s capital markets.
