GEITA GOLD MINING MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY WITH THE GEITA COMMUNITY

GEITA, TANZANIA, 11 June 2026 — Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), in collaboration with the Geita Municipal Council, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), and local communities, commemorated World Environment Day 2026 through a week-long programme of awareness, education and climate action activities aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable living.

Held under the global theme calling for “Climate Action”, the commemorations brought together government partners, schools, community members and employees to raise awareness on climate change and encourage practical actions that contribute to environmental sustainability.

The week focused on three practical areas: awareness, participation and household-level climate solutions. GGML teams visited secondary schools, including Geita Girls’ and Bombambili, where they conducted environmental awareness sessions and cared for trees previously planted within the school grounds. Climate education was also extended to the wider public through local radio programmes, while community engagement sessions in Samina Village and Manga Street created space for direct conversations with residents on environmental protection and everyday climate action.

The week culminated on 5 June with a company-wide march and tree-planting ceremony led by GGML Managing Director, Ashraf Suryaningrat, together with the company’s Directors and Heads of Departments. The activity served as both a public act of solidarity with the global climate movement and a reflection of GGML’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship in Geita.

A key highlight of the commemorations was the distribution of 240 improved cookstoves to community members. This intervention speaks directly to the realities of many households in Tanzania, where cooking still depends heavily on firewood and charcoal. Improved cookstoves burn more efficiently, helping reduce indoor smoke, lowering household fuel use, and easing pressure on surrounding forests.

The impact is especially important for women and girls, who often carry the greatest burden of collecting firewood. By reducing the amount of fuel needed and shortening cooking time, improved cookstoves help free up time that can be redirected toward schooling, income-generating activities and other household priorities.

Climate change is a present and operational reality,” said Ashraf Suryaningrat. “We are committed to taking consistent and practical steps across our operations, at every level, towards national and global environmental sustainability goals. The people who make up our Geita community, both on and off the mine, are an essential part of that journey.”

Yusuph Mhando, Environment Manager at GGML, linked the week’s activities to Tanzania’s long-term development agenda.

Dira 2050 is clear that Tanzania’s future prosperity must be built on sustainable management of natural resources and a green economy,” he said. “Our environmental programmes contribute to that ambition. #NowForClimate reflects the urgency with which we approach this responsibility.”

For GGML, World Environment Day 2026 was not only a moment of commemoration. It was a reminder that climate action becomes meaningful when it moves from policy to practice, from institutions to households, and from awareness to everyday choices.
