NMB, TUMAINI UNIVERSITY PARTNER TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH PRACTICAL SKILLS AND INDUSTRY EXPOSURE

NMB Bank’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Emmanuel Akonaay (left), and the Vice Chancellor of Tumaini University Dar es Salaam (DarTU), Prof. Burton Mwamila (right), sign a three-year Memorandum of Understanding in Dar es Salaam. The partnership will provide Tumaini University students with practical training opportunities at NMB Bank Plc while enabling the bank’s staff to further their expertise in banking and finance through academic programmes at the university.

In a significant step toward bridging the gap between academia and industry, NMB Bank Plc has entered into a three-year strategic partnership with Tumaini University Dar es Salaam (DarTU) to enhance skills development among young Tanzanians.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, establishes a structured framework for collaboration between the financial sector and academia. The initiative is designed to equip students with practical skills, professional knowledge, and industry exposure—key ingredients for competitiveness in today’s evolving job market.

Bridging Education and Industry

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NMB’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Emmanuel Akonaay, emphasized the critical role of education in national development. He noted that the partnership aligns with the bank’s Corporate Social Investment agenda, which prioritizes human capital development.

Education is a catalyst for national development. Through this partnership, we are nurturing a generation of skilled, innovative and competitive professionals capable of driving Tanzania’s growth,” he said.

The collaboration directly addresses one of the most persistent challenges in the labour market—aligning academic learning with real-world demands.

What the Partnership Delivers

Under the agreement, students from DarTU will gain access to hands-on training opportunities at NMB, enabling them to build practical experience alongside their academic studies. This exposure is expected to significantly improve their employability upon graduation.

At the same time, NMB employees will benefit from short courses and professional development programmes offered by the university, strengthening their expertise in banking and related disciplines.

Beyond training, the partnership will also cover:

  • Joint research initiatives
  • Community engagement programmes
  • Career fairs and mentorship opportunities
  • Capacity-building efforts for both students and professionals

This two-way knowledge exchange model reflects a progressive approach to workforce development—one that recognizes the value of continuous learning and collaboration.

A Timely Intervention for Graduates

DarTU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Burton Mwamila, welcomed the partnership, noting its potential to address long-standing challenges faced by graduates, particularly limited access to practical training and workplace experience.

This agreement provides our students with an opportunity to gain real-world exposure before graduation, while enabling us to offer training and advisory services to institutions such as NMB,” he said.

He added that the partnership will be reviewed annually, with the possibility of extension based on its impact and outcomes.

Investing in Tanzania’s Future Workforce

The MoU underscores a shared commitment by both institutions to invest in skills development and build a competent workforce aligned with Tanzania’s long-term development priorities.

As the economy continues to evolve, such collaborations are becoming increasingly essential—not only to enhance employability but also to ensure that the country’s talent pool is equipped to drive sustainable growth.

For Tanzania, partnerships like this signal a shift toward a more integrated approach to education and employment—one that prepares graduates not just for jobs, but for meaningful careers.
