NMB BANK SUPPORTS LIVESTOCK SECTOR THROUGH MODERN BREEDING INITIATIVES

CHALINZE, TANZANIA: The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to revolutionizing the livestock sector by promoting modern animal breeding practices. Through strategic collaboration with domestic and international stakeholders, the aim is to enhance productivity and profitability for livestock keepers across the country.

Tri-Nations Livestock Expo 2025: A Platform for Innovation and Partnership

This declaration was made by the Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Mr. Alexander Mnyeti, during the launch of the 3rd Tri-Nations Livestock Expo 2025 held at Ubena Zomozi Village in Chalinze, Bagamoyo District. Themed “Building Partnerships, Advancing Agriculture,” the event brought together ranchers from Tanzania, Kenya, and Namibia, with strong support from NMB Bank Plc and coordination by local agribusiness firm Mbogo Ranches.

The high-profile exhibition featured participation from senior diplomats including Kenya’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Isaac Njenga, and Namibia’s High Commissioner, Mr. Lebbius Thobias, alongside exhibitors showcasing agricultural technologies and products.

Government Push for Productive Breeds

Highlighting the urgent need for transformation in livestock production, Mr. Mnyeti stated:

About 97 percent of cows in our country are indigenous breeds, producing only 80 to 120 kilograms of meat per animal and just one to three litres of milk per day. This low productivity offers little profit for farmers. That’s why the Government is partnering with stakeholders to drive a revolution in livestock breeding.”

Financial Empowerment from NMB Bank

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nsolo Mlozi, NMB’s Head of Agribusiness, announced that the bank has disbursed over TZS 100 billion in loans to livestock keepers nationwide. The funds have supported activities such as:

  • Livestock fattening
  • Procurement of high-quality animal breeds
  • Construction of modern infrastructure
  • Investment in animal feed and water solutions

We understand the critical challenges farmers face—ranging from drought-related feed and water scarcity, diseases, low-output indigenous breeds, to lack of permanent settlements. Our financial support helps farmers overcome these barriers and improve productivity,” Mr. Mlozi emphasized.

A Learning and Networking Opportunity

Mr. Naweed Mulla, Director of Mbogo Ranches, noted that the expo was carefully designed to offer local livestock keepers practical learning experiences. It also facilitated opportunities to purchase improved breeds of cows, goats, sheep, and poultry from regional counterparts.

This event enables Tanzanian farmers to adopt modern livestock management techniques and fosters valuable networking among East and Southern African players in the sector,” he said.

Diplomatic Support for Cross-Border Collaboration

In their remarks, both Ambassador Njenga and High Commissioner Thobias underscored the importance of regional cooperation in livestock development. The event, they noted, reflects the shared vision of national leaders to elevate agriculture as a key driver of economic growth.

When our President, Dr. Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, visited Tanzania last month, she and President Samia Suluhu Hassan emphasized the need to grow the livestock sector. This event is proof that commitment is being turned into action,” said Mr. Thobias.

From Knowledge to Practice: Farmer Testimonies

Local livestock keeper Taiko Tarongei from Chalinze Council expressed his appreciation for the event, stating that he has gained valuable insights into modern livestock management and plans to implement them to boost productivity on his farm.
