BARCODE TECHNOLOGY USE INCREASES

THE number of domestic manufacturers using the barcode technology has increased to over 1,000 companies and 15,000 products after discovering wide range of benefits.
The GS1 TZ National Limited Marketing Manager Mr Oscar Ruhasha said on ongoing industry expo at the Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds along Kilwa Road yesterday that there is increased awareness over the benefits of using the barcode.
“Majority of business people particularly small and medium entrepreneurs have been acquiring the Barcode technology for their products to compete in the market,” he said.
He said also that the emphasis put by some top government leaders on the use of the barcode technology has helped increasing awareness with some small, medium and large companies moved to acquire the barcode.

“We have witnessed the number of companies increasing particularly after the push from the top government leaders on the importance of using the barcode technology for the local made products,” he said.
He said the use of the country’s own barcode on the domestic products is of paramount importance because consumers from any part of the world can easily trace the origin of the products.
Also, he said to enhance awareness among small and medium enterprises on the benefits of using the barcode technology, GS1 Tanzania Limited will continue to conduct trainings in different parts of the country.
He said the training became an important platform for SMEs to use barcode after making survey in the supermarkets and discovering that greater part of the goods are imported and only a fraction made domestically. One of the reasons given is that the local made goods are of low quality in terms of packaging and labeling, thus the training focused on such areas with shortcomings.
He said apart from playing a key role in identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the supply chain, the barcode system has proved to be instrumental in promoting competitiveness of the domestically manufactured goods.
