Dar es Salaam, 27 June 2026 – Standard Chartered Tanzania, in partnership with Nipe Fagio, marked the Bank’s global celebration of 20 Years of Volunteering by bringing together 74 volunteers, including 20 children, for its annual beach clean-up at Silversand Beach in Kunduchi.
The initiative reflects the Bank’s continued commitment to protecting the environment while empowering colleagues to support the communities they serve through meaningful volunteerism.
Commenting on the initiative, Geofrey Mchangila, Chief Executive Officer and Head of Coverage, Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, said:
“This year’s beach clean-up is particularly meaningful as we celebrate 20 Years of Volunteering across Standard Chartered. It reflects our belief that creating lasting impact starts with collective action. Together with our colleagues, their families and our partner, Nipe Fagio, we are helping protect Tanzania’s coastline while contributing to healthier communities and a more sustainable future.”
The clean-up covered approximately 4,000 square metres of coastline, with volunteers collecting 506 kilograms of waste across 55 bags. Waste audits identified plastic materials, particularly polystyrene foam and plastic beverage bottles, among the most common items collected, reinforcing the need for continued action to reduce marine pollution.
The annual beach clean-up has become one of Standard Chartered Tanzania’s flagship volunteering initiatives. Through its partnership with Nipe Fagio over the past three years, the Bank has organised five beach clean-up events, mobilised 594 volunteers, restored more than 32,000 square metres of coastline and collected almost five tonnes of waste.
The initiative forms part of Standard Chartered’ s broader sustainability agenda and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). As the Bank celebrates 20 Years of Volunteering, it remains committed to empowering colleagues to give their time, skills and expertise to create lasting social and environmental impact.
