As the leading ride-hailing platform in the country, Bolt Tanzania anticipated a huge surge in ride requests to Dar es Salaam’s most popular romantic hotspots such as Posta, Mlimani, and Masaki. With couples, friends, and loved ones expected to flock to those areas for special celebrations, Bolt stepped up to ensure seamless and affordable transportation for all.
Their first step was to announce their predictions on Mwananchi, targeting its Instagram communities, and then offering a 40% discount promo that expired on February 15th at 1:00 AM. Traffic to fine dining restaurants, beachfront lounges, and entertainment venues peaked from 6:00 PM as predicted, and prices went up in the Bolt application to manage the excessive demand.
“What made Valentine's Day more special this year is that it fell on a Friday, the weekday that is already notorious for its nightlife. But the unusual influx of ride requests, as well as the record-breaking number of trips that night, made it more apparent that ride-hailing holds a critical place in the economy. As a strong business, Bolt can stimulate huge demand and unlock customer expenditure in restaurants, entertainment centres, and other areas of the economy,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, the General Manager for Bolt Tanzania and Kenya.
Ride-hailing services account for an estimated 25–30% of urban trips in major centers like Dar es Salaam. According to a December 2023 report by REPOA in partnership with Oxford University, more than 10,000 people work in the ride-hailing industry as drivers of cabs, motorcycles, and tricycles, with an additional over 3,000 in delivery services. The numbers keep growing to address the ever-increasing demand, leading to a corresponding increase in economic vitality as was anticipated during Valentine's Day.
