Women’s role in the realm of scientific innovation and sustainability has become indispensable in driving progress and reshaping the landscape of research and development. Despite all their efforts, women's representation is at 33.3 % of researchers globally, and even their work rarely gains the recognition it deserves [UNESCO: Science Report: towards 2030 (2021)]

Rispa Hatibu, Communication and Sustainability Manager at Serengeti Breweries Ltd attests on how Serengeti Breweries Ltd for many years has stood at the gates of this celebration, championing the tireless efforts and groundbreaking achievements of women and girls in science and making their efforts sustainable.

What are Women’s contributions to scientific research, innovation, and sustainability?

‘At SBL, we take immense pride in our all-female-led Spirit Cube line, which stands as a beacon of innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity in the scientific research sphere. Women in SBL have made groundbreaking contributions to various fields, from pioneering advancements in renewable energy technology to spearheading sustainable materials research.

Additionally, our team's dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation while upholding principles of environmental stewardship and diversity has led to the development of cutting-edge products that not only meet the highest standards of quality but also embody our commitment to creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.

Can you share stories of women leaders within SBL who have made significant contributions to science and sustainability?

Within our SBL family, remarkable women leaders in our supply and human resource function have played pivotal roles in driving forward our commitment to science and sustainability.

Take Natalia Kimacha, SBL Manufacturing Excellence Manager and Saraphine Mwamaso, SBL Brand Change Manager who are leading our STEM apprentices' program. Through their guidance, countless young women have been empowered to pursue their passions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These apprentices have flourished, contributing fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to our projects.

For instance, Evelyne John, one of our STEM apprentices from Cohort 1, developed a groundbreaking sustainable packaging solution that significantly reduced our environmental footprint while maintaining product integrity. Natalia's and Saraphina's dedication to fostering talent and cultivating a culture of inclusion has not only enriched our workforce but has also propelled us toward a more sustainable future.

What are SBL's aspirations and goals for promoting gender equality and diversity in science leadership?

We are deeply committed to this through our STEM Apprentice cohorts where we aim to provide opportunities for young women to explore and excel in STEM fields, breaking down barriers to entry and fostering a culture of inclusion.

Our Spirited Women Network forums also serve as a platform for advocating career guidance and growth, empowering women to reach their full potential while making a meaningful impact on their communities. By facilitating mentorship, networking, and skill-building opportunities, we strive to create an environment where every woman feels valued, supported, and inspired to lead in science and beyond. Our goal is not only to cultivate a diverse and inclusive workforce but also to drive innovation and excellence through the unique perspectives and contributions of all individuals.

How do SBL's organizational policies, practices, and workplace culture play in supporting the advancement of women in science leadership roles?

Our graduate trainee and internship policy prioritizes diversity and inclusion, providing women with opportunities to gain hands-on experience and develop skills in STEM fields. Through targeted recruitment efforts and mentorship programs, we ensure that women have access to the resources and support they need to thrive within our company.

Moreover, our inclusive culture, guided by diversity guidelines, fosters an environment where all employees feel valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives, thereby breaking down barriers and creating pathways for women to excel in science leadership within SBL and beyond.

For instance, our Spirited Women network serves as a cornerstone for the professional development and career advancement of women in STEM. It offers a wealth of resources, including mentorship, coaching, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Through networking events, workshops, and seminars, members of the Spirited Women network connect with peers, exchange knowledge and experiences, and gain valuable insights into navigating their career paths. By fostering a supportive community and providing access to mentorship and coaching opportunities, we are committed to equipping women with the tools and resources they need to thrive and advance in their STEM careers within our organization and beyond.
