Wednesday 31 May 2023, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Uber and Tigo have announced a one-year partnership to roll out a series of cashback initiatives for drivers and riders who use the Uber app.

Effective immediately, drivers on the Uber platform have the option of being registered by Tigo Pesa as Lipa Kwa Simu merchants to enable them to collect funds from riders that use other telecommunication networks. Drivers will be able to cash out from their Lipa Kwa Simu merchant accounts with zero charges through diverse Tigo Pesa agents for any amount below Tshs. 500,000 per day.

Riders who pay for their trips using Tigo Pesa Lipa Kwa Simu will receive 10% cashback in their Tigo Pesa wallets, in addition to other periodic promotions that Uber may run through the app. Drivers who collect funds using their Lipa Kwa Simu merchant accounts will get a commission of 20% of the transactional fees for fares paid by riders.

Uber’s Head of East Africa, Imran Manji says, “We are excited to announce this partnership with Tigo to roll out diverse savings benefits for drivers and riders on the Uber platform. Riders will be able to save on costs and drivers will have the opportunity to increase their earnings. In addition, this is an important collaboration as it provides a seamless and convenient payment avenue on our platform, including those who may be unbanked or underserved by formal financial systems, and typically depend on cash.”

Tigo Pesa’s Chief Officer, Angelica Pesha said: “The partnership with Uber further cements Tigo Pesa’s ambitious goal in ensuring a cashlight society in Tanzania. Uber drivers will now have an efficient payment collection solution that will ensure that their customers have a safe and secure method to pay for their journey from one place to another. Additionally, this collaboration underscores Lipa Kwa Simu as an effective payment solution and we are optimistic that this will take their small business to the next level.”

Ride-hailing as an industry has transformed how we explore and discover our cities, and since its launch in Dar es Salaam in 2016, Uber has been a partner to the city by providing improved mobility options, economic contribution through flexible earnings for drivers and contribution to government revenues.

Imran concludes, “We are certainly excited about Tanzania and rolling out initiatives like these that help drivers grow their businesses, and improve the experience of riders.”
