Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 26 July 2019: Visa, global payment technology company and Engen Tanzania have launched a 2-month consumer campaign aimed at encouraging the use of Visa-on-mobile and other electronic payment forms when purchasing fuel at Engen fuel stations nationwide.

Tanzanian consumers are eligible to participate in the campaign, which runs from Friday 26 July 2019 to 22 September 2019. Consumers who purchase fuel worth Tshs. 50,000 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays within the campaign period using Visa on mobile or Visa-branded cards will be eligible to receive a Tshs. 5,000 voucher.

Speaking on the launch of the campaign, Visa Country Manager for Tanzania, Olive Njoroge commented: “This promotion is a win for consumers who will enjoy the security and convenience of using Visa on mobile as well as be rewarded through our partnership with Engen Tanzania.”

Engen Tanzania Managng Director Paul Muhato said: “In most cases, motorists rely on cash transactions when purchasing fuel, which would require withdrawal of cash from the nearest bank or ATM, a process that is time-consuming and costly. Hence, the use of Visa on Mobile is a much safer mode of payment. We are pleased to collaborate with Visa to encourage consumers to use digital payments and offer them rewards for doing so.”

Earlier this year, Visa, in collaboration with 15 Tanzanian banks, launched Visa on mobile. The digital payment solution allows consumers to send money to each other domestically without paying transaction fees. To use the service, one simply has to download their bank’s mobile app, look for Visa on the application and pay for goods and services either by scanning the QR code or by using a USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) code.

“The transition from cash to a digital economy holds several benefits for consumers, communities and the economy. Working closely with our partners in market, we are able to offer diverse rewards such as this campaign with Engen to accelerate the adoption of digital payments,” Njoroge added.

Visa on mobile (formerly mVisa) is live in India, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Ghana. There are plans to launch in Uganda,Zambia and across Africa in the near future.
