Dar es Salaam, 09th April 2018. The popular Charity Goat Races in Dar es Salaam will continue. After last year’s announcement by the former organizing committee to discontinue the popular charity and family event the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam Oysterbay decided to carry on with the organization of the races in future. The new organizers will keep the structure of the event but hope to attract new fans in addition to existing goat race enthusiasts.

In the past 17 years, the Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races were a staple in the annual event-calendar and one of the premier charity events in the city. The decision by the former organizing committee not to continue with the organization of the event left many fans disappointed. After intensive discussions with the predecessors, the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam (DSM) Oysterbay decided to carry on with the races. Under the new brand “The Rotary Goat Races” this year’s event will take place on June 23rd at the Green in Oysterbay banking on the previous assets of the races: a fun family event with proceeds going to charitable projects.

Other than in the past, however, the proceeds of the Rotary Goat Races will not be given to various charity organizations but are going to be used for own service projects of the Rotary Club of DSM Oysterbay. Those projects will focus primarily on different aspects of education benefitting the local community. “Rotary International and its member clubs have the reputation of very efficiently carrying out projects via its member volunteers, directing almost one hundred percent of project funds to the beneficiaries”, said current President of Rotary Club DSM Oysterbay, Anne Saels. “We believe that with the planned education projects we can make a huge difference in the lives of the people in our community and we are happy that the Rotary Goat Races will play an important role in this”.

The Rotary Goat Races Board Chairman, Amish Shah, is convinced that the Rotary Goat Races 2018 will not disappoint. “With the Motto ‘Wakanda Goat Are You’, we give reminiscence of the year’s most successful movie ‘Black Panther’, hoping to attract new fans and previous Goat Race enthusiast likewise”. As in previous years, says Shah, the Rotary Goat Races 2018 were able to attract large sponsors such as Toyota, Swiss International Airlines and Coca-Cola. “We are thankful for the trust in our organizational capacity that our sponsors have given us and we are confident that the Rotary Goat Races 2018 will be a fun event for everyone”.

The Rotary Club of DSM Oysterbay was founded in 2009 and has currently about 70 members. It is the largest of the eight Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam and supports the community with a wide range of projects including a Community Health Initiative that organizes biannual medical camps in rural and urban Tanzania, the Vijana Poa project to help young university students find employment, the Rotary Dar Marathon to assist the work of CCBRT-Hospital, and Rotary Mission Green, a district effort to plant trees. Furthermore, the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay is currently building various Rotary Community Corps in order to deliver direct community support to beneficiaries.
