The former president of Tanzania Hon. Ally H. Mwinyi led a number of Dar es Salaam residents in the Rotary Dar Marathon 2017 held in Dar es Salaam during Nyerere Day, on Saturday 14th October 2017, which attracted over 15,000 participants. The marathon started and ended at the Green grounds, Oysterbay.
This is the 9th edition of the Rotary Dar Marathon and for the first time the event had a full marathon of 42.2 kms. It also included the 5km & 9km walk and also 21.1km run. The distance for cyclists increased from 21.1 kms to 42.2 kms.
The event was organized by the seven Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam in association with Bank M. This year, Rotary Dar Marathon is raising funds to support the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation (CCBRT) social enterprise project which aims to expand revenues to be able to support subsidised care in the Disability Hospital by constructing a larger clinic. All funds amassed by the Rotary Dar Marathon activities will be used to complete construction of this clinic and also support the equipping and outfitting of the facility.
Speaking after the event, the Marathon Committee Chair Ms. Catherinerose Barretto said that the event has been successful, they have managed to receive so many pledges and cash collections which they are still counting.
Apart from the main partner Bank M, other sponsors of the marathon included SBC (Pepsi), Spicenet, Soft tech, Toyota, ALAF, Azam Tv, Freight Forwaders, Clouds, Resolution Insurance, Vodacom, KLM, A1 Outdoor, Zoom Tanzania, Knight Support, Peri, AON, Maxinsure, Alliance Insurance and Insignia.
