Dar
es Salaam. Mtwara residents have all reason to smile after the regional
hospital received 40 beds and mattress worth Sh20 million, thanks to donation
by Exim Bank Tanzania through ongoing year-long corporate social campaign aimed
at celebrating 20 years of serving the Tanzanian community.
In a
statement released Wednesday October 18, Mr Stanley Kafu, Exim Bank Marketing
head, said: “This year we have reached a significant milestone. We are
celebrating two decades of innovation and commitment to our community. For
years, Exim Bank has invested heavily in the health, environment and education
sector in Tanzania.”
In
total, the bank is investing Sh200 million into the Tanzanian health care by
donating 500 mattresses and beds to public hospitals in 13 regions across the
country.
Statistics
from World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that Tanzania currently has about
seven beds per 10,000 people. Scenes of two or more expectant women in a bed or
some even sleeping on the floor have become quite common in public
hospitals.
The
Mtwara Regional Commissioner, Ms Dendego commended the bank for listing Mtwara
regional Hospital among beneficiaries of the programme.
For
his part, Mtwara Hospital Regional Medical Officer said Dr Wedson Sichalwe
noted: “Shortages of beds is one of the biggest challenges we faced by
hospitals. The donation of 40 beds and mattresses from Exim Bank will go a long
way in addressing this issue.”
Under
the yearlong donation project Bank is planning to donate 500 beds and
mattresses to hospitals in Mbeya, Arusha, Mwanza, Morogoro, Tanga, Dodoma, Kigoma,
Kiliamanjaro, Shinyanga, Mtwara, Pemba and Unguja.
