Dar es Salaam, 8th July, 2016 - The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has launched a youth employability programme that is specifically designed to prepare young graduates for the world of work. The Wajibika program will empower young graduates with the necessary training and development they need to enhance their employment or self-employment prospects. The programme focuses to address the critical gap in youth’s lives when transitioning from education to work particularly among fresh university and college graduates.

The programme - dubbed Wajibika – targets students in 25 universities and in other higher learning institutions based in Dar Es Salaam, as phase one of the initiative, and in the coming months it is expected to rolled out across the country.

Wajibika will be delivered online through a microsite that will be available through the NBC Citizenship page on the NBC website (www.nbctz.com). However, students will be required to register for the programme which is available free of charge. Wajibika will also be delivered through face to face coaching facilitated by NBC employees volunteering through a scheduled timetable which will be agreed with the selected universities and colleges.

The Wajibika programme has been endorsed by Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) and has already introduced the programme to 25 universities and colleges based in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking during a function to officially launch the programme at the University of Dar es Salaam premises on Friday, the NBC Board Chairman, Mr Nehemiah Mchechu, said “We are very pleased to have received the endorsement of TCU for the Wajibika programme, as this has enabled the smooth introduction and hence registration of students for the programme much easier”

The launch event was graced by the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth and Employment) Hon. Anthony Mavunde.

The Wajibika programme is mostly concerned with empowering Tanzanian youths with the required skills and knowledge to secure employment or become self-employed.

“We recognize that there is a virtuous link between society’s progress and our own success, and we therefore continually seek opportunities to be a good corporate citizen, and contribute to the societies in which we operate in a meaningful way.” Said Mr. Mchechu.
