Tanzanian Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe
Security at the Dar es Salaam Port has tremendously improved, a factor that has boosted investment and business at the facility.
The Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, said this at an event to recognize the performance of 18 members of the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) auxiliary police in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.
“I commend you for a job well done,” he said. He said their commitment led the port save millions of shillings that could have been lost because of theft and negligence.
The Minister said as a result of their performance, many countries now want to use the port of Dar es Salaam for import and export goods.
Giving an example, the Minister said that a government and business delegation that visited the port this week was a clear testimony of how neighbouring countries want to use the port as a result of recent improvement in service delivery.
Some of the gifts given to outstanding workers included motorbikes, television sets, mobile phones, money and laptops. The Minister thanked stakeholders who contributed the gifts.
Analysis of the last five years 2008/09-2012/13 indicates that overall cargo handled by all ports in Tanzania has been increasing at an average rate of 13.4 per cent per year. Cargo increased from 7.076 million tonnes in 2008/09 to 11.681 million tonnes in 2012/13.
Bulk liquid cargo through the port of Dar es Salaam increased from 2.400 million tonnes in 2008/09 to 4.355 million tonnes in 2012/13, an increase of 19.0 per cent per year.
The number of vehicles through the port has increased from 52,606 vehicles in 2008/09 to 128,828 vehicles in 2012/13, an increase of 25 per cent per year.
Theft cases at the Dar port dropped from 21 cases to 7 cases in 2012 to 3 cases last year.On the revenue, the port has increased the revenue collected by 14.3 per cent from 325.3bn/- in 2011/12 to 371.7bn/- 2012/13.
