TANGA CEMENT EMERGES OVERALL WINNER ONCE AGAIN IN BEST PRESENTED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AWARDS

Tanga Cement Plc has stamped a trend-setting record after emerging the overall winner in Tanzania for the Best Presented Financial Statements awards 2017 issued by the National Board of Accountants and Auditors, the third feat for the cement giant in three consecutive years.

The award, held as the ultimate gauge for financial reporting prowess in companies in Tanzania, and which passes through a rigorous screening system overseen by seasoned judges with diverse backgrounds, is for companies using the International Financial Reporting Standards(IFRS).

Tanga Cement Plc, also scooped the award for Best Presented Financial Statements for the Manufacturing Sector, stamping their names conspicuously as the indisputable serial winners in the two categories.

TANZANIA SEES COFFEE OUTPUT AT SIX-YEAR HIGH AS HARVEST NEAR END

Tanzania expects to harvest the most coffee in six years as better weather and a high crop cycle boosts output in Africa’s fourth-largest producer.

Output for the season that ends next June may climb 51 percent to reach an April forecast of 65,000 tons, Kajiru Kissenge, acting director of coffee development and operations at the Tanzania Coffee Board, said Monday by phone from Moshi, in the north of the country.

The board in April raised its forecast for this season amid improved weather, a high crop cycle and as trees trees planted in recent years add to supply. Harvesting in the north ended last month, Kissenge said. It typically finishes in October in the west and December in the south, according to the board’s website.

The arabica variety accounts for about 60 to 70 percent of Tanzania’s coffee output. The nation follows Ethiopia, Uganda and Ivory Coast as Africa’s top producer of the beans.

EGYPT AIMS TO KICKSTART AFRICAN TRADE AS IT TAKES AFRICAN UNION CHAIR

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt is promoting itself as a linchpin for intra-African trade and a model of economic reform as it prepares to chair the African Union in 2019.

The country hosted a high-level business forum on Saturday and Sunday in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh that will be followed by an intra-African trade fair in the coming week in the capital, Cairo.

In a speech to the forum, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi encouraged investors from inside and outside Africa to take advantage of opportunities on the continent as countries including his own pursued economic reform.

As chair of the African Union, “we will seek with sincere effort to build on what has been achieved over the past years and to complete our continent’s development agenda,” Sisi told the forum, which was attended by heads of state from countries including Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Niger and Madagascar.

Egypt has been praised by international lenders for moving swiftly to implement structural reforms agreed with the IMF in late 2016, though austerity measures and inflation have left many Egyptians struggling to get by.

KPMG SOUTH AFRICA APOLOGIZES FOR SCANDALS, SEEKS SECOND CHANCE

KPMG LLP, the auditor that shed clients and staff after scandals in South Africa, apologizes for its “misdeeds” and wants a second chance to reestablish its business in the country, Chairman Wiseman Nkuhlu said.

The firm, one of the so-called big four global auditing companies, confessed to publishing a misleading report on the South African Revenue Service that led to a police probe of a former finance minister, did work for the Gupta family who have been implicated in corruption scandals linked to former president Jacob Zuma, and acted as an auditor for a bank that collapsed due to alleged fraud. Its eight top staff resigned in September 2017, some of the biggest companies in South Africa have replaced it as their auditors and in June it said its workforce had shrunk to 2,200 from 3,400.

“KPMG had made a lot of serious mistakes and lost the trust of the public and clients,” Nkuhlu said in an advertisement placed in South Africa’s Sunday Times newspaper. “We had lost sight of our responsibility to serve the broader public interest.”

EAC IN CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL FOREX TRADING

East African governments have stepped up the war against and speculative foreign currency trading.

The latest effort has seen the region’s central banks and capital markets regulators tighten forex trading regulations to weed out fraudsters from the lucrative business.

It is argued that illegal forex trading stands to trigger inflation in the region and weaken local currencies, which would make imports expensive and further worsen budget deficits for regional economies.

For instance, in Tanzania, the local currency depreciated by 0.3 per cent between September and October this year and 2.2 per cent on average in the past 10 months, according to data compiled by global advisory firm StratLink.

The Tanzanian shilling closed the month of November at 2,291.7 units against the US dollar, down from 2,281.5 units against the greenback at the beginning of the same month.

Bank of Tanzania carried out a six-month investigation into the illegal business, which revealed rampant fraud the forex market business, with several traders involved in money laundering.

As a result, the banking regulator launched a crackdown on this illegal business by suspending the licensing of new forex bureaus, arresting some key suspects and barring suspect commercial banks from the interbank forex markets.

“All applications have been suspended and new applications won’t be accepted pending the introduction of new rules and regulations,” said BoT Governor Florens Luoga.

Tanzania used the military to seal off suspicious forex bureaus as central bank officials raided the outlets.

MAGUFULI TAKES ISSUE WITH EAC BORDER RESTRICTIONS

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has blamed cross border restrictions for the higher cost of doing business in the region.

Speaking during the launch of Namanga One Stop Border Post at the Tanzania-Kenya border, President Magufuli said that the aim of having the East African Community (EAC) was about easing business across member states.

He said the border post will enable traders do business unrestricted.

President Magufuli also said that since the border post started operations, revenue collections on the Tanzanian side had increased to Tsh4.5 billion ($1.9 million) from Tsh3 billion ($1.3 million).

The ceremony was attended by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"President Kenyatta and I have been friends and we will keep cooperating with each other to ensure our people are empowered and benefit from doing business without facing obstacles," said President Magufuli.

$1.4 BILLION BUDGET DEFICIT COULD GROUND EAC OPERATIONS

Kenya and Uganda are the ones sustaining the operations of the Secretariat.

The region’s ministers are now pushing for punitive sanctions against defaulters.

During its meeting held in Nairobi in June the East African Legislative Assembly approved the EAC Budget for the financial year 2018/2019, which had been adopted by the EAC Council of Ministers in May this year.

Now South Sudan and Burundi, who have not paid up, are expected to develop a two-year remittance plan on the outstanding budgetary arrears that totals more than $29 million.

In the meeting, the Council of Ministers directed that each partner state was to contribute $8.3 million to the main EAC Budget for the Financial Year 2018/2019, a further $744,436 towards the budget for the Inter-University Council for East Africa; and Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were to also to contribute $517,011 towards the budget for Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation.

FIRST CLASS IS SHRINKING ON AIRLINES AND IT MAY DISAPPEAR ALTOGETHER

• First-class cabins are shrinking, and in some cases have disappeared entirely.
• If you're flying a domestic airline, you'll be hard-pressed to book a first- class seat on Delta, which eliminated international first class, or United, which is phasing out its first-class cabins on international travel.
• The economics of first class are ruinous to both the airlines and passengers.
• Despite the hefty ticket prices ($1,000 an hour, on average—up to 70 percent more than business-class seats), carriers say they barely break even.

Have you noticed that first-class cabins are shrinking, and in some cases have disappeared entirely?

If you're flying a domestic airline, you'll be hard-pressed to book a first- class seat on Delta, which eliminated international first class, or United, which is phasing out its first-class cabins on international travel. American Airlines announced it will soon offer first class on only 20 of its Boeing 777-300ERs that fly to major financial centers, including London and Hong Kong.

Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and Lufthansa are all reducing their proportion of first-class seats as they refresh their fleets with new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s. Qatar Airways, often touted as the world's most luxurious airline, is limiting first class to the eight-seat cabin on its 10 A380s.

Even mighty Emirates, the world's largest international long-haul carrier (by passenger miles own), is reducing first-class seats on numerous carriers and eliminating the first-class cabins entirely on 30 of its 777s and 15 of its A380s.

What's behind the downshift? Money. The economics of first class are ruinous to both the airlines and passengers. Each seat costs between $150,000 and $300,000 to develop and build, and caviar and Krug aren't cheap. Despite the hefty ticket prices ($1,000 an hour, on average—up to 70 percent more than business-class seats), carriers say they barely break even.
