Cooperative Bank of Tanzania (Coop Bank) has officially unveiled CooPesa, its first digital mobile banking proposition, marking a major milestone in the Bank’s journey towards digital transformation and enhanced member-centric banking.
The launch of CooPesa is aimed at accelerating digital adoption among Coop Bank members, improving operational efficiency, and supporting Tanzania’s broader agenda on financial inclusion and the growth of the digital economy. The platform underscores the Bank’s commitment to delivering secure, convenient, and accessible banking services that meet the evolving needs of its cooperative members.
CooPesa enables customers to access a wide range of banking services anytime and anywhere directly from their mobile devices, significantly transforming how members interact with the Bank.
Speaking during the official launch event held in Dodoma, Coop Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Godfrey Ng’urah, described CooPesa as a transformative solution designed to simplify everyday banking while strengthening financial inclusion across the country.
“This product will enhance financial inclusion at the grassroots level nationwide and perfectly aligns with Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050. Our vision is to empower 10 million families,” said Mr. Ng’urah.
He emphasized that CooPesa goes beyond being a conventional mobile banking application, positioning it as a strategic platform that brings banking closer to members.
“CooPesa is more than a mobile banking application. It is a strategic platform that brings banking closer to our members. Through this solution, we are redefining convenience, accessibility, and efficiency in cooperative banking,” he added.
According to Mr. Ng’urah, CooPesa offers a comprehensive suite of services including balance inquiries, bill payments, airtime purchases, and government payments, providing members with a seamless digital banking experience.
He further assured members that the platform has been developed with robust security features to safeguard customers’ financial information and ensure privacy and trust in digital transactions.
The Guest of Honour at the event, Hon. Daniel Chongolo, Minister for Agriculture, commended Coop Bank for introducing the milestone digital proposition and reiterated the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment to supporting the Bank’s growth.
“The existence of Coop Bank sets a foundation for us as Government to consider negotiations towards a single-digit interest rate with other banks for cooperatives and farmers,” Hon. Chongolo noted.
He also applauded the Bank for the progress achieved within just one year of its inception and urged management to continue strengthening the use of modern security technologies in line with rapid advancements in science and technology within the financial sector.
Earlier, Coop Bank Board Chairman Dr. Joseph Witts praised the Bank’s management for the effective execution of its growth strategy, which has positioned Coop Bank among the fastest-growing banks in Tanzania.
“Recent data from the Bank of Tanzania shows that Coop Bank is among the fastest-growing banks in the country. While other banks are walking, Coop Bank should be running,” said Dr. Witts.
He further encouraged the Bank to introduce more tailor-made products aimed at closing the financial inclusion gap, particularly within cooperative societies and underserved communities.
The launch event was attended by senior government officials, Members of Parliament, cooperative leaders, industry partners, and other key stakeholders, highlighting the growing importance of digital innovation in strengthening Tanzania’s cooperative and financial sectors.
CooPesa is now available to Coop Bank members and can be accessed via Google Play Store, Apple App Store, or by dialling *150*84#.
