DAR ES SALAAM, 13 AUGUST 2025 – Tanzania Breweries Plc (TBL) and PETPRO have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch Tanzania’s first scalable post-consumer glass recovery and recycling model. The signing ceremony was held at TBL Headquarters in Ilala, Dar es Salaam.
This strategic partnership comes at a crucial time when waste management and environmental conservation are rising to the top of national priorities. The initiative seeks to address the growing challenge of post-consumer glass waste, creating a long-term, sustainable solution that promotes environmental protection and economic empowerment.
The model aims to significantly reduce the volume of glass waste ending up in landfills, boost nationwide recycling rates, and develop a more circular glass economy for manufacturers across the country. By turning waste glass into valuable raw materials, the programme will directly contribute to Tanzania’s national sustainability goals and align with TBL’s 2025 Sustainability Roadmap.
Speaking at the event, TBL Managing Director, Ms. Michelle Kilpin, said:
“This partnership with PETPRO is a blueprint for how manufacturers can elevate their role in driving both environmental and economic impact. We are excited at the prospect of transforming waste into opportunity, empowering local communities, and protecting our planet for future generations. Ultimately, we hope this initiative becomes a platform to enhance Producer Responsibility within the industry, fostering collaboration among manufacturers as we harness our collective capabilities to deliver even greater impact.”
PETPRO Managing Director, Mr. Nicholaus Jackson, added:
“Through this collaboration with TBL, we are setting a new standard for glass recycling in Tanzania. Our combined expertise will ensure that we collect, process, and return glass to the production cycle at scale—proving that sustainable practices can deliver both environmental conservation and economic opportunity. Together, we are building a cleaner, more resilient future.”
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project is expected to create economic opportunities for waste collectors, recyclers, and manufacturers throughout Tanzania. By establishing a steady demand for recovered glass, the programme will help generate income for thousands of individuals in the recycling value chain, particularly in underserved communities.
Leveraging PETPRO’s recycling logistics expertise and TBL’s extensive distribution network, the partnership will enable glass recovery and processing on a large scale. It also lays the groundwork for further industry collaboration and serves as a model for other sectors—demonstrating that environmental responsibility and business growth can go hand in hand.
This MoU cements TBL and PETPRO’s position as pioneers in Tanzania’s transition to a circular economy. Both companies have committed to working closely with government agencies, local authorities, and industry players to refine the model and expand its reach nationwide.
