Dar es Salaam, August 2025 – The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has announced a historic milestone after the Port of Dar es Salaam handled 27.7 million tonnes of cargo in the 2024/25 financial year.
This marks a sharp increase from 18 million tonnes in 2021/22 and 23.69 million tonnes in 2023/24, making it the strongest performance in the port’s history.
Key Drivers of Growth
Speaking on behalf of TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa, Acting Dar es Salaam Port Director Abed Galluscredited the achievement to:
- Government investments in port reforms and infrastructure.
- Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with DP World (Berths 0–7) and Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited – TEAGTL (Berths 8–11).
- The Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP), which deepened and reinforced the harbour to 14.5 metres, enabling larger vessels.
Efficiency Gains
- Turnaround time for container ships reduced from 10 days to 3 days.
- Larger vessels now making port calls – from 15,000 tonnes previously to 50,000–65,000 tonnes per vessel.
- Nearly 4 million tonnes of cargo added in just one year (2023/24 vs. 2024/25).
Strategic Importance
Mr. Gallus emphasized that:
- The Port of Dar es Salaam handles 95% of Tanzania’s seaborne cargo.
- Every operational improvement reduces logistics costs and boosts predictability.
- Diverting cargo to Kwala Dry Port has helped ease yard congestion and city traffic.
Looking Ahead
To sustain momentum, TPA is focusing on:
- Routine maintenance and system upgrades.
- Digital integration and streamlined documentation.
- Stronger engagement with private partners and port users.
“With the capacity and efficiency now in place, we call on clients and stakeholders to continue using the Port of Dar es Salaam. Together, we can drive both business success and national development,” said Gallus.
✨ Bottom Line: Dar es Salaam Port is fast emerging as a regional trade hub, setting a new benchmark in efficiency, cargo volume, and global competitiveness.
