Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – August 13, 2025 – The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its strong commitment to working hand-in-hand with Airtel to accelerate the country’s digital transformation and achieve the Tanzania Development Vision 2050.
Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu made the pledge following high-level talks with Sunil Bharti Mittal, Airtel Group Chairman & CEO, and Charles Kamoto, Airtel Tanzania Managing Director, at the Treasury Registrar’s Office in Dar es Salaam. The discussions centred on advancing digital connectivity, expanding financial inclusion, and boosting socio-economic growth.
“Today is a very crucial day. We are hosting key executives from Airtel Global, including their Chairman and CEO. Our discussions focused not only on Airtel Tanzania’s operations but also on the broader development of the telecommunications sector and digital systems in general,” Mchechu told journalists.
He further stressed that the government is ready to match Airtel’s commitment by ensuring supportive policies, robust infrastructure, and a favourable investment environment are in place.
Airtel’s Commitment to Deepening Investment
Mr. Mittal underscored Airtel’s determination to expand its footprint in Tanzania, particularly in digital infrastructure, fibre networks, and connectivity services — all vital components of the country’s digital economy agenda.
“The government’s 49% ownership in Airtel Tanzania is a clear testimony that Airtel Tanzania belongs to the people of Tanzania. Today, we have made further commitments to invest more money in our networks and fibre, and more importantly, accelerate digital penetration in Tanzania,” Mittal said.
He also highlighted the strategic partnership between India and Tanzania, noting that sustained investment in digital infrastructure is essential for a fast-growing economy like Tanzania’s.
Supporting the National Digital Transformation
Mittal commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s commitment to the Vision 2050 roadmap, in which digital connectivity and services are positioned as central drivers of socio-economic growth.
“We believe that any country growing at Tanzania’s pace needs a strong digital framework to drive the economy. Airtel is determined to play a meaningful role in achieving that vision,” he added.
Part of a Wider Engagement Programme
Mittal’s visit to Tanzania is part of a broader programme of strategic engagements with key government and regulatory bodies, including the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) and the Ministry of Finance and Planning. The aim is to strengthen public-private collaboration in delivering the country’s digital transformation goals.
