AIRTEL AFRICA FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ‘TECH FOR HER’ PROGRAM TO EMPOWER YOUNG WOMEN IN TECH

Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, Chair of the Airtel Africa Foundation.

Africa, 7 August 2025 — In a strategic move to foster digital inclusion and gender equity, the Airtel Africa Foundation has launched the ‘Tech For Her’ Program, an intensive five-week online training initiative aimed at upskilling young women in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.

In collaboration with Tertiary DNS, the initiative seeks to equip participants with in-demand digital skills including Linux AdministrationCybersecurity, and Data Analytics — with the broader goal of connecting them to global tech opportunities.

The program is part of Airtel Africa Foundation’s broader commitment to empower Africa through Digital Inclusion and addresses the glaring gender gap in tech employment across the continent.

“Africa’s digital revolution cannot reach its full potential without gender equity,” said Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, Chair of the Airtel Africa Foundation.
“The Tech For Her program helps to level the playing field by providing women with industry-relevant skills, mentorship, and pathways to high-growth tech roles around the world. By investing in Africa’s women, we are investing in sustainable economic transformation.”

Flexible Learning, Real Impact

Participants will engage in over 100 hours of intensive training, delivered through a flexible learning model that accommodates both working professionals and full-time learners. Weekend classes are designed for employed participants, while weekday sessions cater to those who are not currently working.

Eligible applicants must have basic digital literacy, and hold at least a national diploma in Science and Technology or equivalent.

Graduates will receive 12 months of continuous support, with top performers (scoring 90% and above) eligible for internship placements at Airtel Africa and access to structured mentorship from technology leaders.

Prioritizing Inclusion

As part of its equity goals, Airtel Africa Foundation is reserving 30% of program slots for women in rural and underserved communities, and 40% of seats will be prioritized for applicants from low-income households.

“Only 30% of tech professionals in sub-Saharan Africa are women,” noted the Foundation, citing data from UNESCO,
“and women occupy just 2-8% of software development roles.”

Annika Poutiainen, a committee member of the Airtel Africa Foundation, echoed the importance of the initiative:

“We are committed to a future where young women are at the forefront of innovation. This program will help build a pipeline of female tech leaders who will unlock digital opportunities at home and abroad.”
