STANDARD CHARTERED LED TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE IN BAGAMOYO

As part of its continued commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, Standard Chartered Tanzania led a tree planting initiative on Saturday, 6 June 2026 at Nianjema Seconday School in Bagamoyo District. This activity reflects the Bank’s ongoing efforts to support climate action, promote environmental awareness, and contribute to the preservation of Tanzania’s natural ecosystems.

This year’s initiative is particularly significant as it marks 20 years of Employee Volunteering at Standard Chartered Bank, highlighting two decades of collective action, community impact, and employee-driven contribution to social and environmental causes.

The event will bring together employees, local leaders, students, and community members in a collaborative effort to enhance green cover and reinforce the importance of environmental stewardship. Through this engagement, the Bank aims not only to restore the environment but also to inspire a culture of sustainability among younger generations.

The initiative will be officiated by local government representatives, underscoring the importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors in addressing climate change and advancing national environmental priorities.

Speaking ahead of the event, Busara Raymond, Head, Transaction Banking Tanzania, noted: The environment is fundamental to our survival —it is the source of the oxygen we breathe, the raw materials we depend on, and the ecosystems that sustain life. This is why conservation is so critical, and why Standard Chartered continues to prioritise initiatives that protect and preserve our environment.”

He further added: “This is our fifth consecutive year planting trees in Bagamoyo, demonstrating our long term commitment to this community. Last year, we planted 2,000 seedlings at Fukayosi Primary School and we are proud to continue building on that impact. Beyond tree planting, we also remain actively engaged in other forms of community volunteering, including a recent mentorship session at Pugu Boys Secondary School.”

The event was also attended by the District Administrative Secretary (DAS) of Bagamoyo, underscoring the strong collaboration between the public and private sectors in advancing environmental sustainability initiatives. Through this partnership, the Bank has successfully planted over 10,000 trees in Bagamoyo alone, and more than 30,000 trees across Dar es Salaam Region contributing to improved environmental sustainability and supporting local afforestation goals.

Over the years, the Bank has implemented various community-driven programmes aimed at strengthening climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.
