PRIME Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa, yesterday received about 600m/- from seven organisations to support the Kagera earthquake survivorsJapanese Ambassador to Tanzania Masahara Yoshida handed over relief goods, including 220 tents, 1,100 blankets and 1,100 bed sheets, for tremor affected people in Kagera Region.
“The goods we are handing over today are worth about 220m/-....it is our sincere hope that necessary measures will be taken to ensure that all these contributions reach the affected people as early as possible,” the envoy said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Acacia Vice-President for Corporate Affairs Deodatus Mwanyikapresented a 325m/- cheque, urging other organisations in the private sector to come up and support the victims. The September 10 tremor, measuring at 5.7 on the Richter scale, killed 17 and left 440 others injured.
The quake also destroyed 2,063 houses and damaged 14,081 others. Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) has also deposited over 40m/- in the Kagera quake account.
Sura Technologies Chief Executive Officer Ramadhan Reddy said besides the 5m/- aid to the Kagera victims, his company will support and work with government to restore the information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure in the affected areas.
“We have been supporting efforts to spread ICT in the country and with the earthquake tragedy, Sura Technologies Limited will facilitate IT resource centre in primary schools in Kagera Region,” he said.
Other organisations, with their presented donations in brackets includes Kinondoni Union of Motor Vehicle Mechanics (2m/-), Internal Audit Office (6.7m/-) and Kariakoo business Community, which donated equipment worth 60m/-. Mr Majaliwa commended all the contributors, saying the door remained open for more support as there was a lot to be done in the area.
“We are still receiving donations, it is not a matter of being rich but having a giving heart is what matters most,” he noted.
The premier reiterated government commitment to ensure that all the donations were used appropriately. He said in the near future the government will provide areport on the disbursement of the donated funds and total amount of money which have been collected since the exercise commenced.
The premier invited Dar es Salaam residents wishing to donate funds in support of the Kagera victims to turn up on this Friday at 12 noon.
