ANALYSTS ENDORSE 'MAGUNOMICS'

President John Magufuli
President John Magufuli’s cost cutting measures and ‘boils squeezing’ economics, for which the term ‘Magunomics’ has been coined, is set to uplift the development budget and accelerate economic growth.

Various economic analysts interviewed by the 'Daily News' believe that the measures will improve social well-being and economic growth as more money would be available for development activities.

The budget for development expenditure on average was allocated between 8.0 per cent and 10 per cent per fiscal year. According to the analysts, the austerity measures under “Magunomics’’ would increase revenue, efficiency, productivity and equality, thus speeding ecogrowth and social well-being.

Prof Humphrey Moshi, seasoned economist with the University of Dar es Salaam, says “Magunomics’’ would create a level playing field among businesses people. “Corruption (in most cases) favours big businesses and harms small ones.

Minus it, it would create a level playing field,” Prof Moshi noted. He noted further that the strategies would also encourage investments from abroad, which the country needs most at the moment to upgrade the social and economic infrastructure. “For instance, the austerity measures on foreign trips are set to strengthen the shilling as it will diminish demand for the foreign currencies,” Prof Moshi argued.

Dr Hildebrand Shayo, a senior economist with TIB Development Bank, said “Magunomics’’ has been introduced to strengthen the delivery chain along the good governance resolve. “The government,” Dr Shayo said, “cannot deliver its development plans without having sufficient revenue”.

DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE SET TO JOIN SELF-LISTING ELITES OF AFRICA

The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), is walking closer to become third exchange in the continent to de-mutualise. The demutualisation or self-listing is a process through which any member-owned organisation becomes a shareholder-owned company.

Frequently, this is a step towards the initial public offering (IPO) of a company. DSE operates as a ‘mutual’ exchange. The DSE Chief Executive Officer, Mr Moremi Marwa said the bourse was walking closer to follow Nairobi Securities Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange which have demutualised.

“We, at the DSE are in the middle of a demutualisation process, being the third Exchange in Africa to achieve what we have achieved this far,” Mr Marwa said in statement. However, the CEO said, other Exchanges in Africa are also seriously considering this option.

“Out of the current 25 exchanges in Africa, more than dozen are positively considering to initiate the process of demutualisation,” Mr Marwa said. The CEO said the demutualisation has many advantages including enhancement of corporate governance within the exchange for sustainable protection of all its stakeholders.

FASTJET APOLOGIZES FOR THE DISRUPTION OF FLIGHTS

Fastjet Tanzania deeply regrets the disruption to customers affected by flight delays over the weekend that started on Friday, 11 December 2015 as a result of the breakdown of the DAR-MWANZA-DAR, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customer's travel plans.

The principal cause of the disruption was a technical problem on the flight. Fastjet engineers worked hard to rectify the fault without success and ultimately a spare part had to be urgently ordered from Brussels, Belgium, which arrived on Sunday morning (13 December 2015) and the aircraft was finally restored and normal operations resumed by Sunday afternoon (14th December 2015).

The delay of that one flight caused more disruptions on following flights, and by Saturday most of the passengers managed to travel but due to the combination of Friday’s customers, there was overbooking, which led to some passengers remaining behind who were thereafter booked on the next flights.
